Studying in Canada

Canada has one of the best education systems in the world. This attracts numerous foreign candidates, young people who have graduated in their country of origin, or those tempted to go back to studies at some point during their career.

The general rule

Student immigration is one of the main activities for Immetis.

Many foreign students in Canada then continue their immigration path as temporary workers before becoming permanent residents.

Before undertaking any studies in Canada, it is necessary to obtain a study permit, or study visa. In Quebec, the future student also needs to have an Acceptance Certificate from this province (CAQ – Quebec Acceptance Certificate).

There are a few exceptions, such as taking a course lasting less than 6 months, or the possibility, under certain conditions, for a child to work, or a foreign student to study at secondary level without a study permit. These exemptions are however limited and strictly supervised, and so professional advice should be taken in this type of situation.

Before starting the process for a CAQ (Quebec), then study permit, the future student needs to have a place on a course.

The choice of course and the school is essential for that matter. This will determine in particular, whether the candidate is allowed to work during and after his/her studies.
