The role of language skills in immigration to Canada
In an officially bilingual country like Canada, language skills play a key role in immigration processes. Whether you plan to settle in Quebec or elsewhere in Canada, mastering French can significantly increase your chances of being selected for permanent residency.
The importance of language skills in Canada’s immigration programs
In Quebec – Skilled Worker Selection Program (SWSP)
Under the SWSP, French proficiency is assessed across four skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. On its own, advanced French proficiency can contribute up to 200 points.
Spouses must also demonstrate oral proficiency in French.
In Canada – Express Entry (outside Quebec)
Under the Express Entry system, French as a first language can earn up to 136 points for an advanced level.
Since Canada has two official languages, mastering both is a real asset for integration and for receiving an invitation. Proficiency in the second official language can add up to 24 points.
French as a first language also gives 25 additional points.
If combined with intermediate-beginner level English, this can result in 50 extra points.
Francophone-targeted invitation rounds
French language skills can earn up to 260 points, which represents about 50% of the total score observed in recent rounds of invitations targeting francophones (“French language proficiency”).
And all of this is without considering other core factors such as age, education level, Canadian work experience, and additional criteria.
Don’t forget to take your French tests!
In summary
Mastering French, and ideally English, is a major advantage in immigration processes, both in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. It directly impacts your score in selection systems, increases your chances of receiving an invitation for permanent residency, and helps with professional and social integration once you arrive.
