THE BASICS FOR

Starting a business in Canada

A foreign national does not need immigration status to purchase real estate or invest in a business in Canada.

A foreign national or a foreign company can also establish a business as a commercial corporation in Quebec or British Columbia.

Elsewhere in Canada, this can also be done, as long as some directors are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

WHEN SHOULD YOU START

Considering immigration

As a foreign national, shareholder, and/or director of a company, you will not be able to come to Canada to work or manage it. Similarly, as a property owner, you will not be able to move to Canada. This is where immigration law comes into play.

If you wish to work or settle in Canada as an entrepreneur or investor, you must first obtain the appropriate immigration status.

To do business in Canada as an entrepreneur, you can choose either a temporary status (entrepreneur work permit/Start up visa) or a permanent status.

In Quebec, there are three programs reserved by the province for business people: investors, entrepreneurs, or self-employed workers. In the rest of Canada, many other permanent residence options are available.

WHERE TO START FOR

A Successful Lauch

Entrepreneur and investor programs both require the preparation of a highly rigorous and well-documented file.

The choice of program will be determined based on numerous criteria, including the province of installation, the invested capital, the project’s social and economic prospects, the experience of the investor or entrepreneur, the immigrant’s assets, and the project’s completion date.

The quality of the project is crucial to the success of a business immigration application. Therefore, it must be precisely defined before initiating the process.
