Obtaining citizenship in Canada
You have been in Canada for several years and feel the desire to become a true Canadian by obtaining citizenship?
We explain everything you need to know about citizenship in Canada and the steps to take to obtain it!
WHY BECOME A CANADIAN CITIZEN?
Every year, Canada welcomes hundreds of thousands of new residents, whether temporary or permanent. Among them, many go through the process of officially becoming citizens. In 2022, over 370,000 people obtained Canadian citizenship.
Many foreign nationals are drawn to the quality of life and diverse landscapes that Canada offers. Among immigrants who initially came to Canada with temporary status, many choose to obtain permanent residence. The final step in this desire to stay in the country and become a full-fledged part of it is the application for citizenship.
Citizenship provides additional rights on Canadian soil and is also, for many, a symbol of belonging to the country.
The rights of Canadian citizens include all those of permanent residents. For example, the right to be protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Being a citizen also comes with other rights and benefits:
-The right to participate in the country’s political life: unlike permanent residents, Canadian citizens can vote and run for provincial and federal elections ;
-No longer worrying about the validity of your status: the expiration of a work permit or permanent resident status is no longer an issue once citizenship is obtained. While the permanent resident card expires every 5 years, citizenship is granted for life and does not need to be renewed ;
–Freedom to leave and enter the country without a residency requirement: permanent residence requires having stayed at least 730 days in Canada over the last 5 years ;
-The right to travel, settle, and work anywhere in Canada ;
-The transmission of citizenship to your children, whether born on Canadian soil or not.
